{"id":110,"date":"2008-09-02T18:41:32","date_gmt":"2008-09-02T08:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=153"},"modified":"2008-09-02T18:41:32","modified_gmt":"2008-09-02T08:41:32","slug":"look-at-them-youve-made-their-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2008\/09\/look-at-them-youve-made-their-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Look At Them, You&#8217;ve Made Their Day!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stepping back in time once again, the late 1980&#8217;s were a tough time for Holden supporters in Australian touring car racing.<\/p>\n<p>From the moment <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allan_Grice\">Allan Grice<\/a> won the 1986 James Hardie 1000 in a VK Commodore, a Holden did not lead a single race lap at the Bathurst until lap 32 of the 1990 race, when <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Perkins\">Larry Perkins<\/a> briefly held the lead during the first round of pitstops.<\/p>\n<p>It would turn out to be a magnificent day for all Holden fans.  Not only having led a lap after so long, it actually looked like one of two Holden Commodores might actually win the race.<\/p>\n<p><center>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"450\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n  <tr>\n    <td align=\"center\" width=\"450\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jih9ARD_4Bc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/center>\n<\/p>\n<p>For most of the day, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Win_Percy\">Win Percy<\/a>\/Allan Grice car looked the most likely, with the Larry Perkins\/<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tomas_Mezera\">Tomas Mezera<\/a> car not far behind.  Right near the end, it seemed that the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perkins_Engineering\">Perkins Engineering<\/a> team was going to walk away with it.<\/p>\n<p>But a mix-up with the dual pace cars in operation that year &#8211; (and never again, thankfully!) &#8211; going at different speeds, Larry lost half a lap at his final pitstop, leaving the Percy\/Grice car back in the box seat.<\/p>\n<p>A few late race nerves in regards to fuel consumption kept us all on the edge of our seats, but a Holden won again, and didn&#8217;t the fans love it.  As former Channel Seven commentator Mike Raymond says on the final lap &#8211; &#8220;Look at them! You&#8217;ve made their day!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>All I can remember was thinking that it made more than just my day.
