{"id":2135,"date":"2011-01-02T09:07:01","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T23:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=2135"},"modified":"2011-01-02T09:07:01","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T23:07:01","slug":"spf-fail-one-for-the-sysadmin-nerds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2011\/01\/spf-fail-one-for-the-sysadmin-nerds\/","title":{"rendered":"SPF Fail &#8211; One for the SysAdmin Nerds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In one for the nerdy mail system administrators out there, I spotted a rather uncommon <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sender_Policy_Framework\">SPF<\/a> result in my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simple_Mail_Transfer_Protocol\">SMTP<\/a> logs this morning.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>If you know your SPF, you&#8217;ll know that no matter what IP address a piece of email comes from, with these records, the email will ALWAYS pass an SPF lookup.  Clearly an interesting spammer tactic, and a demonstration as to why SPF is far from perfect, given you can put anything you like in the records.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/2008\/12\/spf-is-it-worth-it\/\">discussed SPF before<\/a>, and while it is certainly useful, what I saw this morning demonstrates that a better approach is needed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In one for the nerdy mail system administrators out there, I spotted a rather uncommon SPF result in my SMTP logs this morning.
