{"id":3853,"date":"2011-09-24T12:17:53","date_gmt":"2011-09-24T02:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=3853"},"modified":"2011-09-24T12:17:53","modified_gmt":"2011-09-24T02:17:53","slug":"the-very-very-last-of-the-big-bangers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2011\/09\/the-very-very-last-of-the-big-bangers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Very Very Last of the Big Bangers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is often recorded that the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1984_James_Hardie_1000\">1984 James Hardie 1000<\/a> was the final race for the old <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Group_C_(Australia)\">Group C<\/a> racing cars in Australia, before we switched to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Group_A\">International Group A<\/a> regulations for 1985.<\/p>\n<p>It was promoted as &#8220;The Last of the Big Bangers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>What most people either forget &#8211; (or are completely unaware of) &#8211; is that the old cars did one more race after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bathurst_1000\">Bathurst<\/a>, as a support race to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1984_Australian_Grand_Prix\">1984 Australian Grand Prix<\/a> at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calder_Park_Raceway\">Calder Park<\/a> in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>It was held on the old Calder Park short course &#8211; and in fact, the lengthened version of the circuit wouldn&#8217;t exist for another three years.<\/p>\n<p>This was the last non-Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix &#8211; with the race switching to Formula One in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1985_Australian_Grand_Prix\">Adelaide in 1985<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"450\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n  <tr>\n    <td align=\"center\" width=\"450\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wtOOnou87Qg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/center>\n<\/p>\n<p><center>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"450\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n  <tr>\n    <td align=\"center\" width=\"450\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fb4rhqImSsw\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/center>\n<\/p>\n<p>The best part of this particular race, the final run of the old cars, was that I was there &#8211; all of 10 years old &#8211; for a special moment in history.<\/p>\n<p>The very, very last of the big bangers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is often recorded that the 1984 James Hardie 1000 was the final race for the old Group C racing cars in Australia, before we switched to International Group A regulations for 1985.
