{"id":4225,"date":"2011-11-16T08:37:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-15T21:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=4225"},"modified":"2011-11-16T08:37:00","modified_gmt":"2011-11-15T21:37:00","slug":"media-tripe-and-how-not-to-use-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2011\/11\/media-tripe-and-how-not-to-use-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Tripe and How Not To Use Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I often get frustrated with how technology problems are portrayed in the mainstream media.<\/p>\n<p>Invariably, a nameless staff writer gets tapped to write a quick story about a tiny snippet that has appeared on a wire service somewhere, generally without any real knowledge or understanding of what they are trying to write about.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This example &#8211; a syndicated story out of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.afp.com\/afpcom\/en\">AFP<\/a> &#8211; has gone for the lowest common denominator, and a sure fire way to get the story syndicated by other news outlets who equally don&#8217;t understand, by coming up with a Facebook scandal.<\/p>\n<p><center>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"80%\" cellpadding\t=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n  <tr>\n    <td class=\"linkbox\"><a class=\"linkboxtext\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/technology\/technology-news\/facebook-users-exposed-to-hardcore-porn-20111116-1nhrm.html\">Facebook Users Exposed to Hardcore Porn<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/center>\n<\/p>\n<p>I mean, really?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Facebook is investigating reports that some members of the social network have been receiving extreme pornography and violent images in their news feeds.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It seems highly offensive spam content has successfully spread via Facebook for 24 hours or more,&#8221; Cluley said, adding that it not immediately clear how it was being spread.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh my god, facepalm!<\/p>\n<p>Ever wondered why people go to the trouble of creating all those silly groups named along the lines of &#8220;Like This If You Love The Carebears&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>So that in two years from now, when you&#8217;ve completely forgotten about it &#8211; (honestly, you&#8217;ve probably forgotten within a few minutes) &#8211; they change the name of the group to &#8220;I Love Hardcore Porn Images In My News Feed&#8221;, and start &#8220;providing&#8221; you with exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the spammers and hackers folks, trying to get your details!<\/p>\n<p>Just don&#8217;t &#8220;Like&#8221; these things, even if they seem innocuous.  Most of the time they will be fine, but over time, some of them will not be.<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, I got a laugh from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sophos.com\/en-us\/\">Sophos<\/a> engineer saying that it is &#8220;not immediately clear how it was being spread&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p>Oh, man, really?<\/p>\n<p>I love that his name is Cluley.
