{"id":5000,"date":"2012-03-08T19:57:44","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T08:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=5000"},"modified":"2012-03-08T19:57:44","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T08:57:44","slug":"dandenong-road-just-got-a-lot-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2012\/03\/dandenong-road-just-got-a-lot-longer\/","title":{"rendered":"Dandenong Road Just Got A Lot Longer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the world of online mapping, such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com.au\/\">Google Maps<\/a>, or the excellent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/nearmap.com\/\">NearMap<\/a>, we always see errors where various images are combined into a single scrollable map.<\/p>\n<p>Like roads that don&#8217;t quite match up, or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/2011\/12\/experimental-aircraft-at-tullamarine\/\">strange wingless aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all because it would be too hard and time consuming for a human to go through every single photo, and manually match them up.  Even if a human tried, because things move between when each photo was taken, it would still happen.<\/p>\n<p>So, computers do it, and they get it wrong too, like wrongly labelled roads for instance?  Courtesy of Google Maps, here&#8217;s the main highway out of Waurn Ponds, a southern suburb of Geelong (click for larger view):<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Dandenong Road?  Out past the south western outskirts of Geelong?<\/p>\n<p>I suppose <i>technically<\/i> if you keep following that road it will get you to Dandenong <i>eventually<\/i>, but it doesn&#8217;t meet up with what is really called &#8220;Dandenong Road&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Tweaking required Google, but thanks for the giggles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the world of online mapping, such as Google Maps, or the excellent NearMap, we always see errors where various images are combined into a single scrollable map.
