{"id":6306,"date":"2012-08-30T15:00:09","date_gmt":"2012-08-30T05:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=6306"},"modified":"2012-08-30T15:00:09","modified_gmt":"2012-08-30T05:00:09","slug":"another-turnbull-conflict-of-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2012\/08\/another-turnbull-conflict-of-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Turnbull Conflict Of Interest?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hot on the heels of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/delimiter.com.au\/2012\/08\/23\/turnbull-in-conflict-of-interest-investment\/\">potential conflict of interest<\/a> from opposition communications spokesman, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.malcolmturnbull.com.au\">Malcolm Turnbull<\/a>, and his investments in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/2012\/08\/turnbulls-french-internet-connection\/\">France Telecom<\/a>, another possible conflict of interest investment has risen.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It is apparent that Turnbull&#8217;s wife Lucy has a shareholding in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vodafone.com.au\/\">Vodafone<\/a>, in information taken from a register of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/political-interests\">poltical interests<\/a> published by the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear whether this investment relates to Vodafone in Australia, or other overseas arms of the telecommunications company.<\/p>\n<p>However it is on the register, and presents another possible investment that might be proper to divest from, given Malcolm&#8217;s role as communications spokesman.  All parliamentarians are required to declare the interests of themselves and their spouses.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers must divest themselves of any conflicts related to their portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Are the communications investments of the Turnbulls, affecting Malcolm&#8217;s policy positions?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe, maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Given another possible conflict of interest, the question needs to be asked more firmly than before.<\/p>\n<p><i>UPDATE<\/i>: 6:25pm &#8211; The office of Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed that while Lucy Turnbull did hold shares in Vodafone, she no longer holds them.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming this to be correct, any possible conflict of interest with respect to these shares <i>should<\/i> now be gone, and the SMH register would appear to have out of date information.<\/p>\n<p>One point still remains though.<\/p>\n<p>I do still however find it curious that these shares were still taken up in 2012 &#8211; (when they were added to the register) &#8211; and apparently divested also in 2012.
