{"id":977,"date":"2010-06-22T11:21:35","date_gmt":"2010-06-22T01:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/?p=977"},"modified":"2010-06-22T11:21:35","modified_gmt":"2010-06-22T01:21:35","slug":"ultimate-conroy-facepalm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaelwyres.com.au\/mwdc\/2010\/06\/ultimate-conroy-facepalm\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultimate Conroy Facepalm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In [yet another] major embarrassment for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy, the Privacy Commissioner has labelled the inadvertent Google Wi-Fi data collection bungle &#8211; (the same bungle that Conroy called &#8220;the biggest privacy breach in history&#8221;) &#8211; as &#8220;not so bad&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><center>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"80%\" cellpadding\t=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n  <tr>\n    <td class=\"linkbox\"><a class=\"linkboxtext\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/technology\/security\/google-wifi-snooping-not-so-bad-privacy-commissioner-20100622-ytdf.html\">Google Wi-Fi Snooping Not So Bad: Privacy Commissioner<\/td>\n  <\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/center>\n<\/p>\n<p>There are several golden snippets from the above article, credited to the commissioner, Karen Curtis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;At this stage, it appears payload data that has been collected comprises only fragments &#8211; 0.2-second snatches.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;My Office has not examined the payload data collected, and we have told Google not to examine it.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Australian banks use secure internet connections and my Office is not aware of any instances where banking information has been collected.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What this means for the Australian Federal Police investigation into the &#8220;biggest privacy breach in history&#8221; remains to be seen.  No doubt the senator will try and spin it in some way.<\/p>\n<p>Conroy was concerned that Google was in fact collecting personally identifiable location-based information, in collecting information regarding Wi-Fi networks.  As I have discussed previously in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/michaelwyres.com\/2010\/05\/the-privacy-commission-on-google\/\">this article<\/a>, in actual fact the government releases more personally identifiable location-based information than he was accusing Google of collecting.  Google certainly has not released any of the information it collected in error.<\/p>\n<p>Hilariously, in the middle of the massive barney he started with Google, he also claimed on radio that Google may have even collected internet banking details.
